Using robots to adjust the orientation of solar panels one by one to improve power generation efficiency, this unique 1-megawatt solar power system has been launched in the United States (two in California and one in Arizona).

Developed in 2010 by the U.S. venture capital firm QBotix, the sunshine tracking system follows the trajectory of the robot by adjusting the axes of each bracket laterally and longitudinally so that the panels always face the sun. The robot makes a full revolution every 40 minutes and adjusts the orientation of all the panels. A system can manage 200 scaffolds. Each bracket can be set 5 ~ 6 panels.

The robot is equipped with a Global Positioning System (GPS) that calculates the direction of the sun based on time and location and changes the orientation of the panel regardless of the weather. However, it is possible to command the robot via the Internet to adjust the panel horizontally when it is being typhooned to reduce wind resistance and to slash the panel sharply on snowy days to prevent snow accumulation. In order to improve the reliability, a system set up two robots, alternating inspections to adjust the battery board.

The robot is not only responsible for adjusting the orientation of the panel, but also for collecting information on the amount of electricity generated by each panel and the wind force on the panel. Robot wireless access to the Internet, the data saved to the cloud server. Due to the robots instead of people to conduct inspections, it can reduce maintenance costs.

Moreover, it can be known from the power generation data that the panel has failed, and therefore has the advantage of being able to detect the failure in time and minimize the loss.

Lower panel costs and lower set-up costs

Not only does it reduce maintenance costs, QBotix has also made improvements to reduce setup costs. Thanks to the standardization of the robot's walking track and the battery support, anyone can easily set it up in a short time simply by following the instructions.

In recent years, the price of solar panels fell sharply, with solar panels prices will not have much difference. The key to setting up a megawatt-scale solar power system is how to reduce setup costs and maintenance costs. QBotix takes this seriously when developing the system.

Compare the QBotix system with other ways, you will find the cost advantages of QBotix system (Table 1). For example, a 10-megawatt solar power system with a generating capacity of 10 MW will cost less than $ 6 per megawatt-per-megawatt-hour (kWh) of power generation compared to conventional stationary systems. And also lower than other tracking sun way.

The low cost of a QBotix system is due to its capacity. Even if the panels have the same power generation capacity, the amount of power generated is increased by tracking the sunlight. As can be seen from Table 1, its power generation increased by 37% over the fixed type. Therefore, even if the initial investment is about 10% higher, the increased power generation can make up for this part.

Japan also began to verify the experiment

In fact, Japan has already begun to take action. Chiba Fine Chemical Co., a subsidiary of chemical company JNC, started the verification experiment using QBotix technology in Ichihara, Chiba Prefecture in May 2013.

WasiqBokhari said the analysis of the annual amount of sunlight exposure in various parts of Japan showed that "QBotix's tracking method has an advantage even in Hokkaido, which has less light in Japan." The QBotix system is likely to gain popularity in Japan if it can prove cost-effective where land prices are high.
