Bridgestone recently held an inauguration ceremony for its newly built technology center in Thailand. The company announced the construction project in January this year and invested 3.7 billion yen (about US$ 41 million) in funds. The new technology center is located on the outskirts of Thailand's capital, Bangkok, and is wholly owned by Bridgestone's subsidiary, Bridgestone Asia Pacific (BSAP), which will be responsible for tire and product technology development, quality management and procurement. The total number of its employees is expected to reach about 100 people by 2015. At present, Bridgestone's tire technology R&D and quality management business in the Asia-Pacific region is mainly responsible for the company's technical center in Japan. These businesses will be gradually transferred to the newly established Thai technology center. Bridgestone hopes to further strengthen its business in the Asia Pacific region and establish a research and development framework to more timely obtain information that reflects the local market. Incorporating the newly opened Thai Technology Center, Bridgestone currently has a total of six technology centers worldwide, with the remaining five in Tokyo, Japan and Yokohama, Ohio, USA, Rome, Italy, and Wuxi, China. The Asia-Pacific market contributes about 21% of Bridgestone's sales. The company has 11 tire factories, 4 tire reconditioning materials plants, 20 diversified product factories and a number of steel cords in the region.
