The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission and consumer rights organizations "choice" recommend that car owners contact car dealers or manufacturers as soon as possible to determine whether their car is in the recall. The recall includes about 60 models from 12 car manufacturers, covering more than 2.1 million cars in Australia.
Australian Urban Infrastructure Minister Paul Fletcher and Small Business Minister Michael McCormack said in a joint statement on the 24th that the government is waiting for automakers to clarify their respective recall plans. The statement requires the involved company to provide the government with a comprehensive recall plan and progress report, and stated that the Australian government has the right to order a mandatory recall if necessary.
On the 13th of this month, a car accident occurred in Sydney, causing a Honda car driver to die. Police investigations revealed that the cause of death may be that the airbag was ejected when the vehicle it was driving collided with other vehicles, and the ejected metal piece hit the neck and caused death. Further investigation revealed that the vehicle driven by the deceased was recalled due to airbag problems.
The manufacturer of the problem airbag is Japan Takada Corporation. As the leading airbag manufacturer in Japan, the company supplies airbag products to large-scale car companies such as GM, Volkswagen, Toyota and Honda. Takata’s problem balloon has previously triggered the largest car recall in US history. According to Kyodo News, the Takata airbag problem caused at least 11 deaths in the United States alone. Takata has so far recalled approximately 100 million airbags worldwide.
