Recently, during the Norwegian International Maritime Exhibition held, Rolls-Royce's MTU company exhibited its propulsion system portfolio mainly for offshore support vessels (OSV), workboats and ferries.
The company's engines include 2000, 4000 and 8000 series propulsion engines ranging from 400 to 10,000 kW, hybrid propulsion solutions and diesel-electric propulsion systems, and diesel generator sets that power ships.
Rolls-Royce exhibited the MTU 4000 series diesel engine that meets IMO III and EPA Tier 4 emission regulations. In addition to the new catalytic converters developed by MTU, this fifth-generation 4000 series diesel engine will use various advanced technologies to meet emission requirements in the supercharger, compression process and fuel injection system.
In addition to comprehensive solutions that meet IMO III and EPA Tier 4 emissions requirements, including MTU's propulsion systems and selective catalytic converter exhaust aftertreatment systems, users will benefit from having a best-matching system. In terms of power to weight ratio, the system requires minimal installation space and is very flexible.
MTU's new 16-cylinder gas engine for workboats will be available in 2018, with an expanded power range from 1,500 kW to 2,000 kW. Next, an 8-cylinder gas engine covering the company's range of 750 to 1,000 kW will be introduced.
Due to its dynamic acceleration characteristics, its environmental compatibility, reliability and economic operation, it is ideal as a main propulsion device for tugboats, ferries, pushers and special vessels such as research vessels. Its combustion concept will provide efficient use of fuel and ensure that IMO III emission standards are met without the need for an exhaust aftertreatment system. To meet the requirements of the EPA Tier 4 regulations, a compact oxidation catalyst is installed on the engine. Thanks to the double-wall air supply duct, the cabin can be designed in the same cabin as the diesel engine.
